Any person who is selling goods or providing services has to collect GST from their customers if their revenue crosses the specified threshold. Once they cross the threshold, they have to get registered under GST. This article will discuss “How GST Registration is Done.”

Who needs GST registration?

Any company, enterprise, or individual that sells goods or provides services must register for GST if its annual revenue exceeds 40 lakhs for goods and 20 lakhs for services (10 lakhs for special category states). However, certain businesses, like casual taxable persons, persons making inter-state supplies, a person making sales through e-commerce operators like Amazon, Flipkart, etc., non-resident taxable persons, and agents of a supplier, are required to register for GST, irrespective of their turnover.

Steps for GST Registration

The GST registration is to be obtained by applying online and can be completed through the GST portal. The taxpayer can do it or approach any professionals to get it.

Step 1: Visit the GST portal

GST registration can be done online, and the process is simple. To register for GST, visit the GST portal https://www.gst.gov.in  Click on the ‘Services’ tab and select ‘Registration’ from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Fill in the necessary details

You need to fill in your basic details, such as the type of GST Registration being obtained, name, address, and email ID. You also need to provide details about your business, such as the legal name of your business, the nature of your business, the address of the business, an email address, and a mobile number.

Step 3: Obtain the OTP

Once you have filled in all the details, a one-time Password (OTP) is sent to the registered mobile number and email address. You need to enter the OTP to proceed with the registration process. In the future, the email ID and mobile number will be fetched from the PAN card of the applicant.

Step 4: Provide additional details

After entering the OTP, you need to provide additional details, such as the details of the authorized signatory, the details of the proprietor, partners, or directors, bank account details, and proof of business registration.

Step 5: Submit the application

After completing all required fields, you must submit the application. You will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) on the mobile number and email address associated with your account.

Step 6: Verification of application

After submission of the application, the application is verified by the GST officer. The officer may ask for additional information or documents if required.

Step 7: Approval of application

Once the application is verified, the GST officer approves the application, and you will receive the GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number).
